Years ago I saw a Steyr Puch at a car show and wanted one. When a PInzgauer went on eBay, I was in love. (The Unimogs are cool, but very big.). A friend said “IF you could find a Volvo TGB, you would have double the horse power, the coveted Penta inline 6 cylinder liquid cooled engine, and air lockers, but good luck!”. It took a few years diligently searching online to locate one, and another few years to convince the owner to part with it, and then the importation, customs, EPA/DOT, registration, restoration, etc.

This is an incredibly rare 6×6 model, born a “radio truck” which means the back cabin has the slide between the driver section and rear, and factory installed rear heater, as there would be six people sitting in the back, two on each bench (with a floor mounted table) and two jump seats. Highly desirable in this configuration, few were released, most are box trucks/open canvas back transport. (And the military version is superior to the few civilian versions, as they are galv/alum bodies, meaning the lower half was galvanized steel and the upper half aluminum, hence all the oil canning/unevenness on the top half, from years of service.). Rust was originally a problem, and this is how the military addressed it.

After importing this truck, we solved the paint brush yellow paint job by stripping it down to bare metal and giving it fresh primer and a new single stage gloss coat (for durability) in Audi R8 color “Kemora Grey”. The upholstery was redone to the beige with light blue stitching, and all the misc military wiring pulled out. Wheels were sprayed black as well.

The cosmetics continued with new plexiglass in the rear three windows, new gaskets for the front glass, fresh teak side runners, interior beige spray on the top half, and the original radio box controls were left in with them now toggling between red/white led lighting for the interior. And a solid waterproofed bamboo deck for the back. Any missing/broken part was repaired or replaced with OEM.

Mechanically it was brought back to life with new plugs, coil, filters, valve cover gaskets (used OEM and the cork likes to weep a bit), a brake service, full chassis grease, new fuel pump, misc etc. Original exhaust was redone as well. And internal engine cover heat/sound insulated. And fresh snow tires.

All lightbulbs were replaced, the fuse panel is new (OEM, I have a great supplier in Sweden who worked on the original assembly line building the units) center horn/blinker stalk is new, rear lights, front light bulbs, interior lights, etc. Everything on the dash now works, including the “black out” light function, which has two different settings for levels of blocking light from aircraft – but still being able to see the convoy.

I’m sure if you are interested in this truck that you are like me and have googled everything about it. But just in case, here are some basic specs:

engine: Volvo B30A, 3L 6-cylinder petrol 86 kW at 4000 rpm / 206 Nm at 2500 rpm (some source give a power rating of 93 kW. It is possible Volvo did update the engine during its life cycle)
gearbox: 5 speed manual + 2 speed transfer case
fuel tank: 85 litres / 22.45 gal (US)
drum brakes on all wheels
tyres: 8.90”×16” or 9.00”×16”
top speed: a little over 80 km/h (around 50 miles per hour)
C304

GVM: 4700 kg / 10362 lbs
curb weight: 2,820 kg / 6,217 lbs
length: 5350 mm / 210.6 in
wheelbase: 2300 mm / 90.6 in + 1 metre / 39.4 in
with: 1930 mm / 76 in
height: 2170 mm / 85,4 in
This has never let me down, and I have a decent amount of spare parts/consumables. It’s been a strong running truck with far enhanced cosmetics. This is the nicest one I’ve seen, and hopefully you’ll say the same! Happy to answer any specifics. And I’m happy to help to arrange shipping. Thanks for checking it out.
