Up for sale is my AM General M998 HMMWV that was a government prototype. This truck has a really cool story and upon my research and digging up information about this rig, most were destroyed or demilitarized after the prototype trials were complete. Somehow this one slipped through the cracks.

I’ve owned this rig for years now in hopes to fix it up and get it going again. When I first purchased this rig, it was non running and missing a whole slew of parts. The original owner that purchased it from govplanet bought a few HMMWV’s at once and did not realize this one was so special. He didn’t know how to source parts for this particular rig and sold it to me. I have the original owners bill of sale from govplanet and bill of sale from me to him. There is currently no title for this rig so it will be sold as is.

What makes this rig a prototype? The government was experimenting with new engine designs on HMMWV chassis’s. Each chassis had its own variation and capabilities, this chassis was to be tested to withstand EMP’s and to have sonar technology all around the truck. Here’s a little list of this different things on this truck:

-Engine is an International VT275 Turbo Diesel

-Has an ECM and no TCM (3 speed transmission)

-ECM has OBD port and tunes can be installed if wanted

-Bunch of relays that are labeled

-Aluminum overflow tank

-Turbo is from a Porsche 996

-Fuel lines have compression fittings

-Heated and electronic mirrors

-Solar battery tender hook ups (no solar panel)

-Scavenger pump for turbo

-Custom billet aluminum brackets all over

-Unique looking tail lights

-Electronic throttle

-Turbo boost gauge

-Unique radio cables

-Different sets of seat belts

-Massive skid plate

-Driver seat is different (has lumbar and head rest)

I got this truck running and driving for a few months before it broke down on me. I had to source some parts and discovered that this engine is essentially a 6 cylinder power stroke. So anything from a 6.0 power stroke will fit onto this engine. When it was running and driving it was extremely peppy in the throttle, quiet as a mouse and overall a gem compared to the 6.5 hogs. What broke is why I’ve thrown in the towel. There is a torque tube from the transmission to the engine and on that torque tube is a pulley which has drive belts on it to control the alternator. Yes, the alternator mounts under the truck in between the transmission and engine. Weird, I know. But that pulley that the alternator uses snapped off. I already removed the transmission and when I saw the failed component, I did not now how to proceed from there. Looks to be a custom part and if you have machining skills, this piece can be duplicated and this rig can live again! Everything worked great when it did run, transmission shifted normal, engine started and ran great. Engine only has 4k on it.

In the truck bed is a plastic bin of all the bolts, brackets, transmission, transfer case, alternator and parts that came off the truck. It’s all there. Truck rolls freely, I move it on my lot without a problem. I’m ready to sell it, having it listed way under what I paid and spent time on it for. I have other projects I need to pay attention to and it’s time to let someone else have her. If you have any questions or want pictures of anything specific about this rig, don’t hesitate to ask and I’ll be happy to help you out. Thanks for looking!
