Most recognizable and widely seen performing duty in Desert Storm, the 6-wheel-drive M923A2 transport vehicle was an incredibly capable work horse for the military. Despite being rather rare in civilian ownership, we acquired one from a collector who recently passed away.

Spec’ing out at over 25 feet long, about 8 feet wide, nearly 10 feet tall and weighing in at around 22,000 pounds (about the same as four Chevy Tahoes), this beast could be loaded up with 10,000 pounds of cargo. These were originally built by AM General (who made the original Hummer), while later versions such as this one were built by Bowen-McLaughlin-York (BMY).

Under the hood is a suitably massive powerplant, an 8.3-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline six that cranks out 240 horsepower and over 700 pound-feet (a massive 716 lb-ft, to be exact) of torque to move it along. A five-speed Allison automatic transmission sends the power to all six wheels.

Those 20-inch wheels are wrapped in massive Michelin tires measuring 50 inches in diameter. A two-speed transfer case further adds to the trail-crushing ability of this truck, and fording four-feet of water is no problem either.

Inside, there is a pair of comfortable, air-ride bucket seats that are heated and have power adjustment for height. An abundance of gauges keeps tabs on everything and indeed you feel like you’re sitting in an airplane as your eyes sweep across the comprehensive instrument panel. The rear compartment functions chiefly as in-cabin storage, with a diamond-plate shelf spanning its width. A power inverter is on board as well.

Despite its old-school, all-business vibe, this truck features handy modern convenience items that include navigation, a rear-view camera and an Aptiv audio system with Bluetooth and satellite radio capabilities.

Underway, this big rig is easier to drive than you may expect thanks to its precise steering, that willing turbodiesel engine and strong yet easily modulated air brakes. Sitting up so high, you have a commanding view of the road, and as people smile and wave, you feel as if you’re in a one-vehicle parade. We can pretty much guarantee you’d have the only one of these at your local Cars and Coffee event.

Of course, when it’s time to transport very heavy cargo and/or navigate off-road terrain that would scare away a mountain goat, this burly beast is more than ready.
