This 2005 AM General M1043A2 is a bit different from a more standard ex-military Humvee

You still have the awesome go-anywhere prowess of the awesome 4×4 chassis. But this also is a full-bodied vehicle with some features you don’t find in others, like air conditioning.

We don’t have to tell you this is a military-grade vehicle. The sand warfare paint immediately announces this one as a hero’s machine. But if you look at Humvees, then you know an M1043A2 is a bit different. Designated as an armament carrier, this has a full body. Heck, you probably were more likely to see these with a gun turret on top…and that would be a terrific way to make traffic part in front of you! But really, these were meant for serious off-road work. That’s why you have heavy-duty bumpers w/tow hooks, a full-size spare on a swing-away mount, and double beadlock wheels.

The interior keeps the utilitarian feeling of a military Hummer, but there are also some creature comforts you don’t get on many of the others. For example, not only does the full body give you better weather protection, but also the rear hatch gives you a secure place to store cargo. And because this is fully enclosed, it also gets to take advantage of cold-blowing air conditioning. The full carpeting package is another great feature that makes this one desirably distinct. Of course, the all-weather canvas on the four individual bucket seats, toggle switches, and grippy steel steering wheel are all reminders this is a true military Humvee.

Tilt the hood forward to get an excellent view of the 6.5-liter diesel motor. Because this is a variation of the motor that GM used for decades, parts availability will continue to be quite good without having to set foot on a military base. It makes this rugged Hummer a strong runner. And that’s exactly what you want in a go-anywhere 4×4. The big torque of the diesel lets you climb mountains, and a reinforced fully independent suspension that has been built to drive over any obstacle. And if your nature trails include water, then we bet you also spotted the tall air intake and exhaust stack. Plus, with a four-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and four-wheel power disc brakes, it’s easier than you may think to enjoy one of the toughest pieces of military hardware available.
